Me & My Brother's Mistress
What is love? They are different kinds of love, and different ways of loving, that's what a lot of movies have taught me and this is the question surrounding this movie.
This movie is about Yoko (Kasamatsu Nanami) and Misa (Murata Yui) and how the mistake Yoko's brother made brings them together.

The movie starts with Yoko spying on his brother with a camera making photos of him with another woman rather than the woman he is going to marry.
When Yoko speaks with his brother she asks if he is happy with the marriage and with the woman he is going to marry.
After spying on him another day, she decides to talk with the woman her brother is cheating on and ask her some questions.

Surprisingly, Misa seems to be a very sweet and nice woman and starts a respectful conversation about her relationship with Yoko's brother.
Misa explains she knows he is a married man, but that despite that she loves him, and she has hope he would not marry her future wife but choose her because even though he is getting married they have been seeing each other.
At this point of the movie we can see Yoko is a very observer person, noticing each detail of the people that surrounds them, so she knows how are they feeling. We know she has noticed her brother scratches his neck when he is lying, and she notices a little gesture Misa makes, holding more tightly her arm.

Seeing how the conversation took place, how Yoko realizes this little detail, and how she looks at her for the first time she really sees her face, we can feel something is going on her at least by Yoko's side (but we can't see it that clear still). What is curious is that even the first time Yoko sees Misa, she didn't look at her with hate, and she didn't have any preconceived ideas.

We can see after they talk, Misa has to go so she tells Yoko that if she wants to talk to her she can call her with to the telephone number she wrote on the napkin.
After this, what is weird is that Yoko texts Misa saying sorry for the conversation they had the other day and Misa asks Yoko to see her at her house (the one where her brother and brother's future wife live).
With all of this happening I think we can see there's more than a strangers relationship going one and we can see they are not friends, but they have a certain interest in each other, bigger than the relationship Misa has with Yoko's brother.
Misa and Yoko keep hanging out planning how to ruin the wedding that is going to happen. They decide to sent a letter to Yoko's house and give it to Yoko's brother future wife (letter that contains a photo of Yoko's brother with Misa in it.
Yoko calls Misa for a school interview saying Misa is his brother's wife and the teacher is concerned about Yoko's future and what her aspirations are, question that Misa answers with the response Yoko gave to her one day after Yoko took care of Misa because she was drunk.
Misa answers to the teacher question quoting Yoko: "Yoko wants to become a decent person". We can see while Misa is answering how Yoko looks at her, not being just a look you could give to a certain person but a look that contains shock and appreciation.

After the interview they both walk home together and we can see how Misa asks to Yoko about their relationship, asking what is exactly their relationship (but did she had an answer in mind?). Misa: Are we friends? What's our relationship?
Yoko: I have no idea
Misa: I don't know either but I like it
Are they both saying they like each other in a very subtle, in my opinion, yes they are, and as they both say they both like it.

The letter arrives and we can see how the wife reads it, but doesn't react to it at all.
Some days after, Yoko speaks with her and she says Misa went to her flower shop and told her all about her relationship with Yoko's brother, and that she doesn't really care he is cheating because he has to put with some of her errors too, she also tells Yoko she is confident she doesn't have what his brother wants and that she want to have a family with both of them. With what the wife said and what the brother also said one day Yoko asked, we can assume her brother wants to marry her because she loves her and because she wants Yoko to have a family again, because both of their parents died years ago.
When the wedding is near, Yoko's brother breaks up with Misa, and Misa calls Yoko to her house to sabotage the wedding as plan, things that Yoko rejects explaining to Misa, she doesn't want her to get hurt.
During the ceremony at the wedding day, Misa shows up in the middle of the ceremony and just stops in the there staring at the altar, while Yoko's brother stares shocked and the wife just stands in front of him staring at her.
Suddenly Yoko sees Misa doing her gesture, and stands up, holds her hand, and start running with her out of the church.
In my opinion, they love each other. The kind of love it is, is never explained, but i assumed they liked each other romantically. What's more curious about this is how a bad situation being Yoko's brother cheating, and how Misa was in a bad situation where she wasn't loved as much as she loved him, she could find Yoko, that truly cares about her and likes every aspect of her (being seen when she helps her when she is feeling bad after drinking, and how she takes her home).
I like how they didn't "named" their relationship, and how they both appreciate and listen to each other, i like how both of them love the other in their own way.
What i think is one of the biggest aspects of the movie is that they gave importance to the little details, if they really liked each other romantically, they never showed anything, they never kissed, but we can see how with the slightest details they truly care and like each other.
I think the movie ending shows us the beginning of their story together, but the story and their feelings are up to our imagination.
thank you for reading
